RESTORATION OF VOICE AFTER VOICE-BOX(Larynx) REMOVAL

“Patient with throat Cancer speaks even after removal of Voice Box (Larynx) after successful Surgery in Ludhiana Mediciti Hospital.” Patient Satish Verma 58y/M, R/o Ferozepur was having progressive hoarseness of voice from last 6months. He then came to Dr. Rajeev Kapila, ENT specialist in Ludhiana Mediciti Hospital. He was found to be suffering from cancer of Voice Box (larynx) Stage IV. He underwent major Surgery in which his larynx and associated lymphnodes, muscles and vessels, where tumour could have spread were removed. Patient received RadioTherapy for complete clearance of tumour. But patient’s life has totally changed by now as he was not able to speak at all. He could communicate only by writing or by signs. To improve his quality of life it was further planned to revive his voice. He was operated again by Dr. Rajeev Kapila to revive his voice in which very small voice prosthesis (Provox) was put in his throat. Provox is a voice prosthesis which is specially made for patients after Laryngectomy for voice restoration. It requires special technique and instruments to fit this prosthesis. This type of Surgery was only done in higher institutes like PGI Chandigarh. But this is first of its kind surgery done in Punjab by a Doctor from Punjab. Now the patient is happy as he is not only free from fear of cancer but can speak also.
